Sitka Health Summit Priority Areas:
A key component of the Health Summit is the planning session. Here participants start with brainstormed ideas (inspired by the preceding days’ presentations) and work to identify just a few key goals to work toward for the next year.
Sometimes, these areas create enough energy to need a dedicated web page. Often, once the page has served its purpose - the goal achieved, or the focus changed - the page is left behind. Here are links to these dedicated pages.
Create a Bicycle Friendly Community
Build a Community GreenhouseA Bicycle Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation, recreation, and physical activity.
Our goal is to meet the standards of the League of American Bicyclists to be designated a Bicycle Friendly Community by March, 2008, making Sitka the first Bicycle Friendly Community in Alaska.
Community greenhouse to provide food security for all — This project will develop a community greenhouse to grow fruits and vegetables so all Sitka residents have easier access to healthy foods. The greenhouse will make it easier for low-income families to purchase healthy fruits and vegetables, and it will ensure more locally grown food is available within the community.
Support Hames Atheletic and Wellness Center
This project will continue the work started during 2007-08, when creating a community health and wellness facility was one of the four goals from the first Sitka Health Summit. Now that the Hames Athletic and Wellness Center is being run by Sitka Community Schools, this project will develop a sustainability plan and look for funding sources to possibly purchase the building and address deferred maintenance issues.
This project will create and grow a community market where local food producers can sell their goods, such as freshly caught fish and locally grown produce to Sitka residents and visitors.
